Drouant
The ritual has not changed since 1914. The table has not moved. The room has not been renamed.
Drouant is the proof that a restaurant can derive its permanence not from cuisine but from function. It is the chamber where French literary power is exercised — publicly, annually, irreversibly. Le Goncourt ne se discute pas. Il se prononce. And it is pronounced here.
The restaurant itself was redesigned, the kitchen renewed, the menu modernised. None of this is the point. Drouant’s authority rests on a single fact : every November, the most consequential literary decision in France is made in this room, over this meal, at this address.
